JEE Main (Joint Entrance Exams – Main) is one of the most competitive Engineering exams in India for Admission to various government engineering college. JEE is conducted in two part JEE mains for admissions to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), IIEST Shibpur, Central Funded Technical Institute. JEE Advance the top 1.5 lakhs students who clear JEE Mains are allowed to give Advance. This exam is for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology(IIT) and Indian School of Mines Dhanbad.

JEE Mains is conducted every year by CBSE in the 1st week of April. JEE mains consist of 2 papers.

Paper 1: for B.Tech and BE

Paper 2: for B.Arch and B.Planning

List of Colleges other than IIT which uses JEE Advance scores are Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) if you take admission to any of the following college you are eligible to give 2nd attempt in JEE but if you take admission in IITs you are not allowed to attempt JEE again.

JEE Main Eligibility for 2016 Examinations

In order to give Joint Entrance Exams for 2016, there are certain criteria that the students have to follow. These criteria are different for General, OBC and SC/ST

Date of Birth (DOB):

Category Born After the following year
General 1st October 1990 (ie max age 26)
SC/ST/ PwD 1st October 1985 (ie max age 30)

Note: Your document for proof of DOB will be Secondary Education Board/University certificate your birth certificate is not valid.

Year of Appearance in Qualifying Examination (QE): Year of giving 12th or plus 2

As per the eligibility criteria for JEE main 2016 only those student who have qualified their 12th / Equivalent examination with PCM and scored above 50% marks from in the year 2014, 2015 and are giving in 2016 are allowed to give JEE mains.

Important Note for JEE Main Eligibility for 2016

  • If you have given 12th in the year 2013 or before you are not eligible for JEE Main
  • If you gave attempted your 12th in 2013 and did not pass and gave it again in 2014 then you are not eligible to give exams.

List of Equivalent Exams that IIT consider

  • CBSE / ISC / State Level Board: The final board exams of class 12th conducted by them.
  • Pre – University Examination: Intermediate or pre-university examination conducted by any recognized Board/ University.
  • National Defence Academy: Joint Services Wing two year course
  • National Institute of Open Schooling: Senior Secondary School Examination with minimum of five subjects
  • Association of Indian Universities (AIU): Any public/Board/ University examination recognised as a 10 + 2 exam by AIU

Here are some more equivalent Exams for Admission to IIT only

  • Diploma: 3-year course which is recognised by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) or Board
  • Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) vocational examination
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) examination at the Advanced (A) level
  • Cambridge University: High School Certificate Examination
  • Geneva: International Baccalaureate Diploma (International Baccalaureate Office)

Total number of subject to take in 12th or qualifying exams for B.Tech from IIT

The student must have taken 5 subjects in 12th / Equivalent exams, but 50% above in PCM is required

  • Language
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Any only of the following: (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject)
  • Any other 5 subject

Total Number of attempts for JEE Mains

The Total number of the attempt which a student can give for JEE Mains in 03. 1st with 12th, 2nd within 1 year of 12th and last is within 2 years of exams

For the student of following states Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland and Odisha

In 2014, these states merged their entrance exams with JEE mains and to get admission in any of the state colleges the number of attempts is as per the state exams. Example: students who gave 12th in 2013 can give exams from MP, but the result will be valid only in MP and not in NITs/IIITs or any JEE main related colleges.

    sir I have taken admission in first year at IP university can I give jee main third attempt and get admission into nit or iiit Hyderabad directly in second year

    Hello sir.main 2013 m 12th m fail tha. But jee mains m marks 250 they. 2014 m 12th m pass. And Jee mains m marks 212. 2015 m 12th and Jee mains dono k marks acche they but admission nahi le paya. Kya m ab 2017 ko Jee mains de skta ? Sath m 12th bhi karu ?

    Sir here state diploma is also allow but diploma ka liya form kab niklata ha aur jab nikla hova ha Vo ha ya nhi ya alga Sa bhi niklata ha kya

      Yes, to appear in JEE (Advanced) a diploma holder can apply in JEE Main 2016 but your rank and score for JEE (Main) will not be declared as diploma holders cannot apply for admission in NITs and CFTIs through JEE (Main) channel.

      Hi Benjamin
      For JEE main you have 3 attempt (to get NITs and IIITs).
      Yes so if you fail in 1st attempt you can give another attempt.
      You can give attempt within 12th + 1 year and 12th + 2 years after that you can not give.
