The race to get admission in the most prestigious technical institutions in India- the IIT’s, is a really tough one. From 2013 onwards, there is a common examination conducted for admissions into the IIT’s, NIT’s and other centrally funded colleges.
This examination consists of two stages namely JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. JEE Mains is a qualifying examination and its score can be used for admission to NIT’s, four IIIT’s and other central and state funded colleges. 60% JEE Mains score and 40% 12th CBSE score of a student is combined to prepare a merit list which is used for admissions to B.Tech and B.Arch in the above mentioned colleges.
Using the score of JEE Mains, top 1,50,000 students qualify for the JEE Advanced examination which is much tougher and requires more extensive study than JEE Mains. Those who clear the JEE Advanced and are also in the top 20 percentile of the successful candidates in their respective boards and in their respective categories may get admissions to sixteen IIT’s and ISM Dhanbad.
This year, JEE Mains was conducted in offline mode on 6 April, 2014 and in online mode from 9 April, 2014 to 16th April, 2014. CBSE announced the JEE Mains 2014 result on 2 May, 2014. Around 1,50,000 students were short-listed and declared eligible for JEE Advanced 2014. The approximate cutoff which was used to create the merit list for JEE Mains 2014 was:-
- General : 115
- OBC : 74
- SC : 53
- ST : 47
JEE Advanced was conducted on 25 May, 2014. The paper consists of two objective type papers of three hours duration each. Each paper consists of one part of Maths, Physics and Chemistry each.
The result of JEE Advanced is expected to come out on 18-19 June, 2014. CBSE had declared results for class 12th for almost all the regions by 29 May, 2014. There 44 school boards in the country and by the time JEE Advanced’s result is declared, almost all the boards would have announced the results. Once the Advanced’s result is out, the registrations for counseling will start for the successful candidates from 20 June, 2014 onwards.
