Every year thousands of students sit for the coveted IIT JEE examination for nearly 9600 seats in 15 IITs all over the country. But to be selected from lakhs of students to study at the premium institute, you need to have a good rank overall and meet all of the eligibility criteria.
You need to study the trends of the ranks for the past few years to get a fair idea where you stand as per your All India Rank. Take for example; the AIR 1 got an aggregate of 440 marks in 2011 while the AIR 1 in 2010 for an aggregate of 418 marks. Similarly, in 2011, the AIR 501 got 346 marks while the student in 2010 got 304 marks. The AIR 2501 got 291 marks in 2011 and in 2010 the same rank-holder got 250 marks.
This comparison can help you get a window into the ranks and aggregate marks that the students got to know where you stand in your admission to IITs. As per the current trend of the 2013 JEE, the ranks will only be given to those candidates that have attempted both the papers. As per the marks, the marking will be done as per the aggregate marks obtained in the JEE (Advanced) in Paper 1 and Paper 2 of each subject. The total of all marks that are obtained will be the aggregate marks of the student.
You need to score at least 10% in each subject in the JEE Advanced and over 35% in total marks to be on the Common merit List. The OBC and other reserved categories will have their own separate merit lists with a minimum of 9% in all of the subjects and 31.5% in total. While the trends suggest that the SC & ST categories need to have a minimum of 17.5% in the aggregate to successfully get admission to any of the IITs.
The popularity of joining IIT-Mumbai, IIT- Delhi and IIT Kanpur still holds as compared to other IITs. However with the new opening in other geographical locations, chances and seats have increased. In India, the main objective of engineering and science education is to bring about advancement in research and knowledge.
Though most of the students are confused about selecting self-study IIT-JEE program with online support of subject experts of Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry, or joining a regular class, students prefer home-based study program as it saves time commuting.
