Question

Calculate the binding energy per nucleon of carbon  nucleus. Given : mass of carbon atom = 12.00000 u, mass of proton = 1.00867 u, mass of electron = 1.00055 u. The energy equivalent of 1 u is 931.5 MeV.

Solution

Correct option is

7.68 MeV

The carbon nucleus has 6 protons and 6 neutrons and 6 orbital electrons revolving around the nucleus.

This is the sum of the masses of the nucleons.

This is the mass of the carbon nucleus. Therefore, the mass-defect is

Its energy equivalent is

                                                        = 7.68 MeV.
