Question

Find the equation of the circle passing through the points of intersection of the circles x2 + y2 – 2x – 4y – 4 = 0 and x2 + y2 – 10x – 12y – 40 = 0.

Solution

Correct option is

2x2 + 2y2 – 18x – 22y + 69 = 0 & x2 + y2 – 2y– 15 = 0

Equation of the any circle through the points of intersection of given circles is

⇒ x2(1 + λ) + y2(1+ λ) – 2x(1 + 5λ) – 2y(2 + 6λ) – 4 + 40λ = 0

Substituting the values of λ in (1), the required circles are

     2x2 + 2y2 – 18x – 22y + 69 = 0 and x2 + y2 – 2y – 15 = 0.
