Question

BF3 reacts with (CH3)3N to form an adduct (CH3)3 BF3. The bond length of B–F bond in the adduct is

Solution

Correct option is

More than that in BF3

In adduct the bond length of B – F bond is more than that in BF3

In the aduct there is no back bonding between fluorine and boron and so there is no double bond character and thus the bond length B – F is more than that in BF3 where we find double bond character due to back bonding of fluorine and presence of vacant p-orbital on boron.
