Question

The relative density of ice is 0.9 and that of sea water is 1.125. What fraction of the whole volume of an iceberg appears above the surface of the sea?

Solution

Correct option is

1/5

Density of ice = 900 kgm–3. Density of sea water = 1125 kgm–3. If V is the total volume of the iceberg and n is the fraction of the volume of the iceberg that appears above the surface of sea water, then the volume of the submerged part of iceberg = (1 – n)V. From the principle of flotation we have

Which gives n = 0.2.
