Question

A 4.5 cm long needle is placed 12 cm from a convex mirror of focal length 15 cm. find the location and the length of the image of the needle. What happens when the needle is moved farther from the mirror

Solution

Correct option is

Its image moves farther behind the mirror.

In usual motion, we have

The distance v of the image from the mirror is given by

Since v comes out positive the image is formed behind the mirror

If y1 and y2 be the lengths of the object and the image respectively, then, the magnification is

Since the magnification is positive, the image is virtual (erect). The length of the image is

When the needle is moved farther from the mirror, its images moves farther behind the mirror towards the focus and its size goes on decreasing. When the needle is far off. Its almost point image is formed at the focus of the mirror.
