Question

The focal length of an achromatic combination of two lenses is 60 cm. If the ratio of the dispersive powers of the two lenses is 5/3, then find out the focal length of the two lenses.

Solution

Correct option is

f = – 40 cm, f’ = 24 cm.

For achromatic lens-combination, we have

In achromatic (convergent) lens-combination the glass of convex lens is of less dispersive power, and the glass of concave lens is of more dispersive power. Here dispersive powers are in the ratio 5:3. Hence first lens (f) is concave and second lens (f’) is convex.

Substituting ω/ω = 5/3 in the above eq., we get

Let the focal length of the lens-combination be F. Then

From eq. (i):

or                                 f’ = 24 cm.

Putting this value in eq. (i):

                                   f = – 40 cm.
