Question

An element X which occurs in the first short period has an outer electronic structure s2p1. What are the formula and acid-base character of its oxides?

Solution

Correct option is

X2O3, amphoteric

The outer electronic configuration = s2p1

Thus, valency = 2 + 1 = 3

Therefore, the formula of the oxide is X2O3.

Since, it is an oxide of III group element, its nature is amphoteric.
