Question

In Haber process, 30 litre of dihydrogen and 30 litres of dinitrogen were taken for reaction which yielded only 50% of the expected product. What will the composition of the gaseous mixture under the aforesaid condition in the end?

Solution

Correct option is

10 litres NH3, 25 litres N2, 15 litres H2

N2(g) + 3 H2 (g)  2 NH3 (g)

1 L of reacts with 3 L of H2 to from 2 L of NH3.

Thus N2 is the limiting reactant.

10 L N2 will react with 30 L H2 to from 20 L NH3

As actual yield is 50% of the expected value, NH3

formed = 10 L, N2 reacted = 5L, H2 reacted = 15 L

∴Mixture will contain 10 L NH3, 25 L N2, 15 L H2
