Q. what is the difference between molar conductivity and molar conductance?
Conductance is the degree to which the solution conducts electricity. . Molar Conductivity is the conductance of the entire solution having 1 mole of electrolyte dissolved in it.
Q. Is it necessary that oxidation always takes place at anode and reduction always at cathode?
Reduction always occurs at the cathode, and oxidation always occurs at the anode. Since reduction is the addition of electrons, electrons must travel toward the site of reduction. In an electrolytic cell the negative charge is on the cathode, while the positive charge is on the anode.
Q. Oxidation state of each Cl in CaOCl2 is:
a)0
b)+1
c)-1
d)+1,-1?
The molecule CaOCl2 can be written as Ca(OCl)Cl. It contains 2 Cl atoms of different oxidation state. The ion Cl- is in -1 oxidation state and OCl- ion is in +1 oxidation state.
Q. Identify the cases where there is a change of oxidation number:
a)Acidified solution of CrO42-.
b)SO2 gas bubbled through an acidic medium of Cr2O72-.
c)Alkaline solution of CrO42-.
d)Ammoniacal solution of CrO42-.
e)Aqueous solution of CrO2Cl2 in NaOH.?
When SO2 gas bubbled through acidic solution of Cr2O72− , it reacts as follows:
Cr2O72−+H++SO2→SO42−+2Cr3++H2O
i.e. Cr2O72−+H2SO4+3SO2→SO42−+H2O+Cr2(SO4)3
In the above reaction, chromium changes its oxidation number form +6 to +3 (red) and sulpher gets oxidized.
